Lightweight blocks

Lightweight blocks are masonry units made with lighter aggregate or an aerated mix, so each block weighs less than a standard dense concrete block of the same size. They are mainly used for partition and infill walls, upper floors and boundary walls, where lower weight and faster laying matter.

Where lightweight blocks are used

  • Partition and infill walls in framed buildings
  • Upper storeys and rooftop rooms where extra weight is a concern
  • Boundary and garden walls
  • Houses, apartments and commercial buildings

Benefits

  • Lower dead load on beams, slabs and foundations
  • Larger units lay faster than small bricks and need fewer joints
  • Easier to cut, chase for services and fix into
  • Better thermal performance than dense concrete or solid clay units of the same thickness

How to choose

  • Decide whether the wall is load-bearing or an infill or partition. Your structural engineer sets the strength grade.
  • Pick the thickness for the wall: thinner for partitions, thicker for external walls.
  • Plan the finish. Plaster, paint or exposed block can change which face and tolerance you want.
  • Share your quantity and site location so we can quote delivery with the blocks.

Questions about lightweight blocks

What is the difference between lightweight and standard concrete blocks?

Lightweight blocks use lighter aggregate or an aerated mix, so they weigh less for the same size and insulate better. Standard concrete blocks are denser and heavier, which suits walls that carry more load or need more mass.

Can lightweight blocks be used for load-bearing walls?

Some strength grades can, mainly in low-rise buildings. Your structural engineer should confirm the grade required. Ask us for the strength details of the block you plan to use before you order.
